The Sweet Tooth’s Guide to Chincoteague Island

If you're a visitor to Chincoteague Island and you've got a sweet tooth, you're in for a real treat! This charming island is not only famous for its wild ponies, pristine beaches, and seafood, but also for its delectable sweets. From award winning ice cream to nostalgic treats, Chincoteague has something to satisfy every sugar craving. Here's your guide to the island's top sweet spots:

Island Creamery (6243 Maddox Blvd.)

Island Creamery has been a beloved local sweets stop since its doors opened in 1975. While its roots were originally in the candy sector (Did you know the shop’s name was originally Mr. Chocolate?!) ice cream quickly became this amazing shop’s staple. Homemade, small batch ice cream made with fresh, local ingredients, have led to this shop being named the “Best Ice Cream Shop in America” by USA Today! Give their “Marsh Mud” a try if you stop by. It’s a chocolate lover’s dream!

Mister Whippy (6201 Maddox Blvd.)

You may not be able to buy ice cream cones for a nickel like you could when this popular ice cream shop opened up in the mid 1950’s, but you’ll still get the same amazing soft serve ice cream we’ve all come to love! The iconic twist cone is a must try, and they even have Dip Top Cones for those looking for a little extra indulgence! Enjoy your treat at the outdoor picnic tables while taking in the island’s laid back atmosphere!

Sandy Pony Donuts (6276 Maddox Blvd.)

Sandy Pony Donuts offers a delightful twist on the classic donut. These delectable treats are made to order and come in a variety of flavors including “Ms. Sandy,” “Aww Shucks,” and “Pony Party!” Be sure to stop by their Maddox Blvd shop and savor the warm, melt-in-your-mouth goodness.

Build Your Own Cookie (6503 Maddox Blvd.)

For cookie enthusiasts, a trip to Build Your Own Cookie is an absolute must. Create your own cookie masterpiece by choosing your warm, homemade cookie and adding your favorite ice cream and toppings! BYOC also offers cookie sandwiches, milkshakes, malts, floats, and much more!

Pony Tails Taffy (7011 Maddox Blvd.)

Pony Tails Taffy has it ALL! Fudge, classic candy, and a gift shop that will let you take a little slice of Chincoteague home with you all await you at this one stop shop just past the traffic circle!

High Tide Candy Company (6448 Maddox Blvd.)

High Tide Candy Company is a delightful candy store that will transport you back to your childhood. This shop offers an extensive range of candies, as well as shaved ice, fresh popcorn, pretzels and so much more! One of the best things about High Tide is if you’re not planning to be in town for a while, you can order fudge and taffy to be delivered to your home, ensuring you’ll always have a little piece of Chincoteague nearby.

Pony Pop (7059 Maddox Blvd.)

A one stop shop for desserts and drinks, Pony Pop allows you to create your own sodas, floats, and shakes! Ice Cream Nachos, their Shark Bites drinks, and the Misty’s Prints Sundae are some of our staff favorites, but don’t forget to get creative when you give Pony Pop a try. The possibilities are endless!

ALB Macarons

A hidden gem on the island, ALB Macarons specializes in Macarons, eclairs, and cream puffs! Be sure to stay tuned to their Facebook page as they offer themed sweets for various holidays and events. ALB even has options for Birthdays if you’re in town celebrating another trip around the sun!

After satisfying your sweet tooth at these Chincoteague Island gems, you’ll probably want to take a leisurely stroll along the island’s beautiful waterfront downtown or relax on the beach, enjoying the views and the breeze. Whether you’re here for a mini week or an extended vacation, don’t forget that Chincoteague Island offers more than just its wild ponies and sunsets - it offers a delightful array of sweet memories as well.
